Google is developing a feature that will make scanning QR codes from a distance simpler

Even using the zoom capability, you could have had problems reading a QR code if you have an Android phone and have attempted to pay for anything or scan one that was far away. However, it seems that the new Google function will make it simple to read QR codes from a distance by “auto-zooming.”

According to the most recent Google API made accessible to developers, Google is apparently working on a new feature that would zoom in on a QR code when it notices it in the camera frame, making it simple to scan codes for payments and information.<img decoding=”async” class=”alignnone wp-image-113493″ src=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-first-merit-list-for-jnu-ug-admission-2023-is-predicted-to-be-released-on-august-8-details-inside-download-2023-08-05t174344.465.jpg” alt=”” width=”1181″ height=”786″ srcset=”https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-first-merit-list-for-jnu-ug-admission-2023-is-predicted-to-be-released-on-august-8-details-inside-download-2023-08-05t174344.465.jpg 275w, https://www.theindiaprint.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/theindiaprint.com-first-merit-list-for-jnu-ug-admission-2023-is-predicted-to-be-released-on-august-8-details-inside-download-2023-08-05t174344.465-150×100.jpg 150w” sizes=”(max-width: 1181px) 100vw, 1181px” />

According to Mishaal Rahman, Google’s new QR zooming functionality was found in the updated ML Kit Barcode Scanning API library version 17.2.0. According to The Verge, this capability works with Google’s code scanner when it is incorporated into other applications as well as the system app for scanning QR codes.

According to Google, the “code scanner API provides a complete solution for scanning codes without requiring your app to request camera permission,” maintaining user privacy.

Also according to Google, “using this API is ideal for apps that require seamless code scanning without the need for a custom UI or camera experience.” The technology does not raise the size of applications since it is already a part of Google Play services on your devices.

Given that Android 13 and later share the same ML Kit’s Barcode Scanning library, Mishaal Rahman notes that smartphones running Android 13 or later may have this auto-zoom functionality.

The availability of this functionality on Android phones, as well as the part the camera quality would play in it, are both unknowns. Users will find it much simpler to read QR codes without manually zooming in once it becomes accessible, however. For areas like India, where consumers often scan UPI QR codes to make payments, this capability would be great.
